British IP Day 2017

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Business, Copyright, Design, Innovation, Patents, Trade marks

We all love a sequel: Led Zeppelin II, Super Mario Bros, Aliens, The Empire Strikes Back and...British IP Day.

British IP Day celebrates the contribution that Intellectual Property (IP) makes to the national and local economy and is returning for its second outing on 5 July 2017.

IP is not just fundamental to the success of creative businesses but also to the wider economy, including the retail and supply chain. The Alliance and its members are clear; IP needs to be a priority for government. And that has to be recognised in Brexit negotiations, future trade deals and the Industrial Strategy.

The importance of IP is evident

The UK is the second largest exporter of recorded music; in December alone the film sector accounted for half of all growth in the key services sector. And the UK consumer games market reached a record £4.33 billion in 2016. The UK continues to hold its place as the second largest art market in the world. It generated over £8 billion in art sales in 2016 and our total design economy was worth £34 billion in 2013. British branded goods are some of the most highly valued and recognised, giving products prominence in international markets. The UK toy market is worth an astounding £3.5 billion. The success of these industries highlight the priceless ‘soft power’ attraction of the UK and their success is only possible by maintaining strong IP protections.

We launched the first British IP Day on 5 July 2016 when creators met their respective Members of Parliament and we hosted our annual Parliamentary Summer Reception, with a keynote speech from then-Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, John Whittingdale. Our inaugural IP Champion Award was presented by then-IP Minister, Baroness Neville-Rolfe. Both Ministers stressed how vital it is for the UK to remain as a world leading creator of IP to ensure ongoing economic prosperity.

This year we are going bigger (the Directors Cut box set edition)! We’re building on last year’s successes and will once again be putting IP at the centre of the political agenda. Hosting a drop-in event in the House of Commons for creators and creative businesses to engage with their MPs and to allow our great IP intensive industries the opportunity to stress just how important protecting IP rights is. The following week our Summer Reception will once again attract Parliamentarians, stakeholders and industry leaders to the Terrace Pavilion, where Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport Karen Bradley will deliver a keynote address. The event, kindly sponsored by the BPI and Premier League and hosted by Pete Wishart MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Intellectual Property Group, and will also feature the presentation of the 2017 IP Champion Award, sponsored by the British Brands Group.

We will be active on social media promoting the day and the vast contribution that IP intensive industries make to the British economy. We welcome the opportunity for you to get involved by spreading the word and publicising what strong IP protections mean for you, and invite you to use the hashtag #BritishIPDay!

Why can't the UK IPO combine its celebrations with World IP Day on 26th April instead of having a separate day?

      Hi Debbie

Thank you for your query. The IPO is proud to support both World IP Day and British IP Day as part of collective efforts to raise the profile and understanding of IP. We do not organise or own either of these 'days' but recognise the challenges of getting the message across to a diverse and large audience and so see no dilution of our work supporting both.
