Patent harmonisation - the holy grail
From the perspective of an outsider – which is what I was 5 years ago – the world’s patents system looks on the face of it rather strange – critics might even say dysfunctional.
John has been Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Comptroller General of the IPO since February 2010. He began his career with the then Department of Trade and Industry and has worked in areas of European Policy and as Director General of the Fair Markets Group. As CEO John is responsible for advising Ministers on all IP policy matters and for the operation of the Office, which grants some 5,000 patents and 40,000 trade marks each year.

It’s not often as Chief Executive that I get the chance to stop and reflect on past achievements.
This week the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) published patent no. GB2,500,000.
